Music

The Music Studio gives young people the opportunity to meet with new musicians, collaborate, form bands, make friends and record original material. Whether it’s a one to one or group workshop, the YMCA offers free tuition between the ages of 14 and 25 and the music and youth workers are also available to deliver sessions at youth clubs, schools and other events.

Young people coming to the studio have benefited hugely from the courses we offer. Some of them gained accreditations in Group Music Composition Skills, others have recorded an album and managed to get more gigs as well as opportunities to play at music festivals. YMCA Swansea provides a safe environment and an opportunity to be creative in a professionally equipped recording studio. It’s a friendly place that provides young people with a chance to gain new skills and volunteer.

Youth Engagement

We provide bespoke weekly group sessions at our recording studio for young people who attend a Group Music Workshop with training provider Act Enhance. Music is used as an engagement tool to develop confidence, skills and spark new interests. The young people often have no prior experience, this is no problem at all.

We pack up all our kit and visit The Foyer in Swansea once a week to deliver song writing workshops and get the young people engaged in positive and fun musical activities with workers sitting down and playing songs with the young people who live there. Often we find the young people end up coming into the recording studio to develop their work in the professional environment.

“It’s just when I come in here man it hypes me, you’ve got all the equipment and everything” – Scott Renton, 22
